Job Description

JOSA, a Jordanian organization dedicated to promoting and developing open-source technology for social good, is seeking a creative and user-focused Product Designer/Engineer to join its newly established product team and own the design and implementation of JOSA's open-source digital products, platforms, and tools.

This role lives at the intersection of design and code. You will be the person on the product team who is closest to the user, responsible for understanding their needs, shaping how products look and feel, and bringing those designs to life. You will work primarily alongside the product manager and other members within the product team, while collaborating with the program team and tech team. The ideal candidate is someone who leads with design thinking (user research, wireframes, interaction patterns, visual polish) but can also roll up their sleeves and write clean code to implement features.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong alignment with JOSA's mission and values.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience and portfolio).
  • Previous working experience in product design, UI/UX design, or frontend development is preferred but not required; strong internship, freelance, or project experience is welcome.
  • Demonstrated design skills: a portfolio or examples showing user-centered thinking, clean visual design, and thoughtful interaction patterns.
  • Proficiency in design tools such as Figma, Sketch, or open-source alternatives like Penpot.
  • Working knowledge of frontend development (HTML, CSS, and JavaScript) with experience in or willingness to learn a modern framework (e.g., React, Vue, or Svelte).
  • Courses and certificates in UI/UX (e.g., Google UX Design, IxDF Courses) are welcome.
  • Understanding of accessibility principles and responsive design.
  • Understanding of, or genuine interest in, product management concepts, such as user stories, prioritization, and user feedback loops.
  • Good Arabic and English communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across disciplines.

TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES

Product Design

  • UX: Conduct user research, interviews, and usability tests to deeply understand the needs, workflows, and pain points of JOSA's users.
  • UX: Synthesize research findings by producing user journeys, mind maps, affinity maps, and personas for JOSA's product users.
  • UI: Create wireframes, prototypes, and visual designs that translate product requirements into intuitive and accessible interfaces.
  • UI: Contribute to and maintain a consistent design system (components, patterns, guidelines) across JOSA's products.

Product Development

  • Software Development: Implement designs in code, building responsive, accessible, and performant UI components and pages.
  • Collaboration: Work within the product codebase alongside other engineers, contributing clean and maintainable code.
  • Communication: Bridge the gap between design and engineering by ensuring that what ships matches the intended user experience, down to the details.
  • Quality Assurance: Write and implement software tests to ensure high code quality, reliability, and production readiness.

Work in an Agile Collaborative Environment

  • Collaborate closely with the product manager to translate user needs and product strategy into design solutions that are both desirable and feasible.
  • Work with the program team to understand the real-world context of JOSA's stakeholders and ensure products are designed and developed with their realities in mind.
  • Participate in sprint planning, design reviews, and retrospectives as an active contributor to the product team's rhythm.

Open Source and Community

  • Contribute to JOSA's open-source products with well-documented design assets, style guides, and code that welcome external contributions.
  • Help make JOSA's open-source projects approachable by ensuring clear, well-designed onboarding experiences and documentation for external contributors.
  • Stay current with design trends, tools, and open-source practices.
